Music Video

This post on the blog is to show all our research in to music videos, pop-rock videos and our planning and preparation for our own video. This post contains textual analysis of much videos in our genre. All of our research is shown below.

Typical conventions of music videos There are typical conventions of each type of genre. The typical conventions of pop music are:

-Catchy lyrics and beats

-Good looking artists

-Music videos which tell a story, usually about love and relationships

-Repetitive chorus Artists and dancers dress and dance sexually

-Wear stylish clothes

-Glamorous settings for the music videos

-Artists tend not to play their own instruments, more about vocals and looks target a younger audience

-The artists are made for commercial reasons, to make money, not so much to show talent.

There are also themes which are typically shown in music videos. These are as follows:

- Rebellion

- Love

- Sexual attractions

- Criticising society/modern culture

- Having a good time

- Relationships/ friendships

- Death - Anger

- strength of character

- Personal experiences

There are themes out of these which are typical to pop-rock. There are mainly rebellion, relationships/ friendships and person experiences - childhood? memories? We will use these themes in our own music video.

Music video analysis

Before creating our own music video, we decided to analyse a few music videos from within our genre. This helped us to decide on what to include in our own video and helped us show how we are influenced by other videos within our genre. We chose to analysis videos by The Script, Paramore and Kings of Leon as they are very successful acts within the pop-rock genre. The Script - For The First Time (click title to view video)

As ‘The Script’ are an Indie-Pop-Rock band, I chose to analyse their latest single ‘For the First Time’ because they fall under our chosen genre of pop-rock. As the majority of our target audience said that they watch music videos on music channels, we want to make a music video like this, which is suitable for viewing at any time of day. This music video shows a good example of what we want to include in our own music video. It features the main singer dancing on stage, whilst singing and playing his own instruments. The other band members also feature playing their own instruments too. The video shows a storyline which relates closely to the lyrics of the song. Both the band members and the people acting the storyline are dressed in casual clothing, an action point we made for ourselves, as we would like our band members to wear casual clothing so that the audience can relate to them, as they could easily wear the same style of clothing. The band also has a good looking lead singer, which attracts the target audience, of both genders. We aim to do the same with our band.

This music video also uses many different camera angles and effects that we could use as ideas for our own. It uses, high and low angle shots, close-ups and extreme close-ups, long shots, black and white effect, fast motion, superimposition and quick cut editing. This is effective as the audience get to see both the story told through the lyrics and the band that are singing the song. This suits both people who like seeing a storyline and also those who like to see the artists playing their own instruments in the music videos.

Paramore: ‘Careful’ music video analysis: (click to view video)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-IL6kbf5HA&NR=1be.com/watch?v=I-IL6kbf5HA&NR=1

I chose to annotate this video as according to our research ‘Paramore’ is a very well known and highly successful Pop Rock band. It also links to the creation of our own band as it is a gender mixed group. According to our audience research, our target audience prefers this. In this video the band is shown playing on stage in front of a live audience. I chose to review this video as this is a potential idea we have for our own music video. There are also short clips of band in the recording studio. This is also an idea we could consider as it gives the viewers an insight of things off stage. The band is also shown playing their own instruments, our target audience recommended us to do this in our music video too.

Kings Of Leon - Sex On Fire Music Video Analysis : www.youtube.com/watch?v=94RNp7veIJE&ob=av2n (click to view video)

Firstly this music from Kings of Leon "Sex On Fire" falls under our genre which is pop rock although this song would certainly back up the rock side to our production research. This is a very popular rock song which a large number of people began to like the style of rock Kings of Leon were producing and performing. This style of rock is not severe rocky music although it has a large sense of enjoyment and sing-a-long factor to it. This video is ideal to link to our production as the band members of Kings of Leon are all playing their instruments in several sections of the music video which is one of our action points we are aiming to achieve in our video. The appearance of the band members are typical rocky lads with beards and long hair although that is the ideal representation of rock style music artists. Kings of Leon have a lead singer who appears to take the main storyline role of the video although the other band members do play their part in the storyline to the video as well which links to our production. This links to the action point we want to achieve by having a lead singer with the other band members supporting the lead singer playing instruments which is a convention from our genre pop rock. The clothing in the video is very casual and links to the nature of the song and the title of the song. Our band we are going to choose casual clothing which we are taking from the genres home style/theme. The band members are very muscular and appearing in black vests could be a way to appeal to the target audience and we are going to appeal to our target audience by having a good looking and attractive band. The music video uses a large number of camera angles, for instance the close up to insinuate the meaning in the lead singer's eye at the beginning and closes throughout the start of the video introduce other band members. Other medium and long shots to show the band playing and singing and this could be used to show the audience the equipment, appearance and setting. A huge amount of quick cutting was involved in the music video and this could connect with the tempo of the song which is an adrenaline rushing rock song which innovates quick movement around the setting of the video. These techniques are ideal and effective in the way it shows the audience the bands story and linking the video with the song lyrics closely.

Denotation and Connotations of music videos

We looked at different types of music videos from different genres. There are three types of music videos: conceptual, performance, and narrative. Some music videos are also a mixture of two of these. We looked at different types of music videos so that we could decide which type we will make for our band.

GreenDay - 'American Idiot' - performance video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkmEZsKcms

- American Flag: used to represent location/nationality of the band. Links to name and institution of the band.

- Editing/transitions: switch between normal and polarised image, and image on the camera monitor - showing the person from different perspectives - good and bad? old and new?

- Quick cutting: to the beat of the song - can be used to represent the energy and atmosphere of the performance.

-Shots are sped up: to create the energy of the performers. They are also quite an 'old' band, so may use this to make themselves seem younger?

- The lyrics 'Don't want to be an American idiot': this is the message they are putting across - they are not going to follow what they're being told to do.

- Tattoos: portray the stereotypical 'rocker' image.

- American flag is green: (usually red and white) the green could be used to represent money - today's society is more concerned about money? Money is corrupting citizens of America? They are criticising themselves aswell? The green could also represent the rot/decay of America's society?

- Old camera: post modern reference? 1950/60's - portrayed on camera monitor - shows difference between then and now? Values - represents 'old' America and reality? The colour - dark(in a warehouse?) and tinted green light: dark - criticising main stream power - hide away. The green light relates to the bands name and also the flag in the video - green colour theme.

- Chorus: the images that are shown are important to show the narrative/meaning of the story. - Repetition in chorus: mimicking structure of song - emphasising the main message. The camera is constantly moving to represent the atmosphere and energy of the performance. A hand-held camera is often used to create this effect.

The Saturdays - 'Ego' - performance/narrative http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Umag84Fqk4I

- Representation: the band members are dressed as superheroes to support the message of the song? 'girl power' - portraying them as being strong. Polysemy. Egotistical.

- Paparazzi: 'what you see isn't always what you get' - different underneath? Criticism of gender equality: appeals to the audience - teenagers are rebellious?

- Set at night: referring to typical comic heroes who come out at night. Could represent that at night the true person is shown? opinion - hidden? - Special effects are genre specific. - Constant mix of camera shots.

- Shows each of the band members separately: establishing each of them as individual artists as well as a band.

- Mix between performance and acting a storyline: shows they are trying to put this message across equally through the lyrics and story.

- More than one storyline going on: one for each of the members - relating to personal experiences? Also used to represent 'girl power' - they work together to beat the male.

The White Stripes - Fell in love with a girl - Conceptual The band focus more on their music than image as the video is not of them but of lego people telling the story line. By doing this, they are also showing that they are breaking the conventions and showing a more playful side. It also suggests they are already established and didn't need to create an image for themselves. However, they follow the typical conventions of a music video and their genre (indie/rock) as their camera is constantly moving, no still frame. This causes the video to stand out from others and shows creativity, appealing to their target audience.

Nirvana - Smells like white spirit: Hyper reality/ concert - not real/fiction

-The video is set as a concert and features the target audience of the band.

-The message of this video: more about the music and not image, it is genre specific (rock), not flashy or showing off.

-It features the target audience and shows the rebellious which is most appealing to the target audience.

-The lighting is dark and features shadows, this symbolises the tone of song and is genre specific.

- The fog and spotlight are included which are main conventions of a rock concert.

- Their look is also genre specific and rock artists typically have long hair which they also do in this video.

Representation in music videos We looked in to representation within music videos to see how many successful acts are represented. The purpose of using representation in music videos is to help explain which genre the artist belongs to. It also helps to create a celebrity/star or a brand. By looking at how other artists are reperesented, it has helped us to decide on how to represent our own acts within our music video. Below shows our research in to three different music videos:

Beyonce - Sweet Dreams -Beyonce is shown to wear minimal clothing - a black leotard, implying that the video is mainly about focusing on her and not the music.

- Body movement - she is dancing throughout this video. Most acts within this genre are represented as being good dancers.

- Beyonce never leave the centre of the frame. She is always positioned in front of the other people - her dancers. This helps to represent her status as an artist - she is shown to be the most important, she is important within the music industry as a whole.

- She uses eye contact with the audience. This gives the video a personal feel for the audience as they feel more involved.

- She uses suggestive facial expressions - this links to the dancing. This represents her as a typical act within this genre. The facial expressions and dancing usually links to the lyrics/song.

Christina Aguilera - Dirty - This video, despite being sung by a woman, shows manly characteristics - through the boxing - in the narrative. This represents Christina Aguilera as a strong female.

- The use of close ups, of her lips, and long shots, of her whole body, shows her as the star of the video. She is what the audience need to focus on.

- The use of featuring other artists. By having a rapper on her song, it shows that she is established and is now helping others with their career. It also shows that she is diverse, she can incorporate other genres of music within her songs. This shows her trying to break away from the 'cute' pop image she had before, like Britney Spears.

- This music video broke pop music boundaries by going deeper with represting sexualisation. This represents her as a controversial artist like Madonna.

Ne-Yo - Closer

- He has used font to show some of the lyrics. However he always remains in the video. He does this because he wants the audience to know the words.

- He has broken the typical RnB clothing as he is wearing more formal clothing - suits and jumpers.

- He has used props such as a motor bike to suit the clothing he is wearing. It shows a 1950s glamour.

- This song indicated a change in Ne-Yo's career as before this he created many typical pop songs. This song shows him to be representing a clear theme of being a 'gentleman', a theme which is shown throughout the album this song was taken off.

Influences Before creating the music video, we watched many music videos from within and outside of our genre to help create ideas on what to include in our own. We payed particular attention to The Script's music video for 'For The First Time'. They used a switch between performance and narrative in a way we found interesting. They were performing for part of the music video. However they were not performing to a crowd, they were performing for themselves, to nobody else. When trying to decide what to base our narrative storyline around, we decided to do some research in to what the original version of 'Ignorance' by Paramore was about. As we did not want to directly copy their idea, we changed it, creating our own version of the story and making it fit to our band and themes from within our genre.

Music Video

Below we have created an initial proposal, outlining the decisions we have made for our music video. We have discussed what type of video we will create - performance, narrative, conceptual or a mixture - and how we will show creativity within this. We have also created a costume and props list to show how our band will be dressed and what props are needed for each shooting location.

Initial Proposal

As a group, we have chosen to use the song 'Ignorance' by the pop-rock band Paramore for our music video. We have chosen this song as it was successful and the lead song from Paramore's album which was released in 2009. Paramore are also a well-known act in the pop-rock genre. The song fits with our band as our lead singer is a female and so is the lead in Paramore. We are going to make a music video which shows both a performance and a narrative, showing part of a story. This is typical of music videos in our genre, as they tend to use a mix between both of these. The first storyline will be the band performing to the camera, as if it is a live performance just for the viewer. This is to help give a personal feel, as if the show is just for the viewer alone. The narrative storyline shows one of Amie's personal experiences. Her friends start to realise she is more interested in her fame and music and slowly drifts away from her. This is shown through scenes of Vintage Rocks rehearsing and scenes of her friends going to see her, only to find she is not there as she is caught up with her band again. To show that her friends are slowly drifting away, we will show a photograph of her and her friends. Each time this photograph is shown, one of her friends will disappear, until eventually she is standing in the photograph alone. We have chosen to use the theme of friendships and personal experiences as these are both typical themes of pop-rock music. Most acts also use scenes of them performing, as this gives an insight in to them as a band, instead of individuals.

Our music video will link to our other texts - the magazine advertisement and the digipack cover - as the costumes the band are wearing for the front cover of the digipack will be worn throughout the performance part of the video shown during the chorus. The black and white imaging used on the cover will be used in our music video too for the live performance. However the story lines involving the lead singer - Amie - and her friends will be in normal colour. The black and white filtering of the performance scene is to show that this is the past, the reason for their failed friendship. We will show creativity in our music video with the use of the changing image. This will be shown through an insert shot, between two scenes to help the audience understand the narrative. We will also show creativity through the use of switching between colour and black and white filming as not many music videos show this. Costumes Live performance on stage: Andrew - Grey blazer with embellishments, skinny jeans, white t-shirt and grey plimsolls. Amie - Black skinny jeans, cropped grey and black top and black biker boots. Stuart - Blue jeans, green and white checkered shirt and white plimsolls. Music studio: Andrew - Jeans, black t-shirt and grey plimsolls. Amie - Black skinny jeans, casual t-shirt/jumper and black shoes. Stuart - Jeans, white t-shirt and white plimsolls. Friends narrative (outside Amie's house): Friend 1 - Jeans, t-shirt/jumper, shoes. Friend 2 - Leggings, t-shirt, shoes.

Props List Live performance on stage: Drum set guitar stage microphone and stand Music studio Drum set Guitar Microphone & stand Recording room and equipment Mobile phone Friends narrative (outside Amie's house) Mobile phone Photograph of Amie and her friends (for flashbacks)

Contacting the institution To ensure we did not breach any copyright laws, we decided to contact Warner Music Group - the instituion by which Paramore are owned - in order to gain permission to use their song. We called the number provided on their website and asked permission. We were informed that we would be called back once the person who could grant or deny permission was available. However they did not call back and we could not get in contact with them again a few days later. They did not provide an alternative email to contact them on.

Paramore's Image

Paramore’s clothing represents the kind of image they are trying to portray of themselves, which is very laid back and casual. They don’t try too hard with making an effort with the way they look, but want people to focus solely on their music and performance. The colour trend that is repeated throughout the bands clothing is black, white, grey and red. These colours all relate to the stereotype of the rock genre, but the red can also relate to love and romance which could link to the pop side of the band. These colours are repeated throughout the bands entire brand, e.g. on their album, etc. This is to link each product to one another. We like the way the band repeat this trend and would like to try something like this with our own band. The album cover and digipak we produced includes similar colours, such as: black, white and yellow, and so we will think maybe about dressing our band in these colours, and repeating this institution throughout its brands and products. Below shows two screen shots of the titles for Lady GaGa's music video. These have been taken from her official video on YouTube.

__________________________________________________________________

Titles As a group we have decided to break the typical conventions for music videos in general but also the pop/rock typical title conventions. The typical conventions consist of the artist or bands name, song title, album name and a year when it was produced. All this information will usually appear with the video coming onto the screen and the music with or without verse beginning. Whereas we considered and reviewed various other established music artists in our genre that have experimented with this style and decided to use that style for our Vintage Rocks music video. Lady GaGa's music video 'Aleandro' fits into our pop/rock genre, with her name and the song title appearing on a black screen with white bold lettering. This has influenced hugely with the title arrangements at the start of our music video and feel it is very necessary to use this style and layout in order to break conventions and create awareness.

Drawn Storyboard

We have drawn out a storyboard to show what we intend to do in our music video. By using the lyrics, we have times each frame to link with the song exactly. Below shows our storyboard:

Drawn Animatic Storyboard Below shows the video we created using Final Cut Express. This is a animatic video of our drawn storyboard. We created this in order to show the exact pace we want to create for our final music video. By editing the recording of each drawn image together, we are able to see how the video should look once finished.

1. Is the pace of your music video appropriate to your genre and song? We have chosen the song ‘ignorance’ by the Pop/Rock band ‘Paramore’. After analysing their original video we decided to keep the fast moving pace and quick cuts as it sets the loud, enthusiastic performance energy. The quick cuts throughout our music also match the fast beat to the song and the flashing lights in the live performance. The quick cuts are a trend within pop/rock music videos and this is another reason why we have decided to use them. The fast pace is appropriate to our genre and song as it is most popular with the target audience. The quick cuts to set the fast pace are mostly within the live performance to seperate this from the narrative. 2. Are the order of events clear and do they fit with the song? Is the meaning of the music video clear? The order of events are made clear although there is a switch between different storylines throughout the video. One obvious way in which we have made the switch between each event/storyline clear is to use a black and white effect during the scenes and shots where the band are performing. This is to clearly state the change between from how amie - the lead singer has changed, and has come to 'ditching' her friends for the band - the band are shown seperatly to the friends to imply the distance between the two. The order of events fit to the beat of the song, and we have tried to time it so that the shots represent the lyrics which are being sung at that point. At a part in the lyrics she implies that she has changed or that things are not the same as they used to be - we have represented this by showing her being away from her friends and ditching them for the band. She is saying that her friends cannot except that change is good, and this is the reason that they have grown apart - from this line I feel as though she is quite naive and maybe this is where the repeated line in the chorus has come from - that she is being ignorant about it. We have represented this in the video showing her rehearsing with the band whilst having flash backs, where she realises that she has been ignorant about the situation, and she breaks down. We have tried to produce our music video in a way which visually tells the story as well as speaks it to the audience. We have tried to create a storyline which supports the lyrics to this song. From anaylising the lyrics we have discovered that the lead singer is speaking of own personal experiences, and that she herself has fallen out with friends because of rehearsals, etc. -due to being in a band. The meaning of the music video is clear as we switch between her growing distant from her friends, and the reason behind all of it: the band - stating clearly which is which by the colour change. We wanted to enhancethe fact that the story behind the song is true so that an audience who feel as though they have gone through the same kind of situation can relate to it.

3. Are the storylines/performances clear and appropriate? Throughout the song we have clearly split the sections of the song into performance of the band and the narrative storylines. We chose to use the chorus to show a live performance which is clear by the setting and use of instruments. We have chosen to repeat this during each chorus as this is typical of many music videos. We have put this part of the video in black and white, showing that it is different from the narrative storyline. We have used black and white effect to show that the band is the reason behind the failed friendship in the other storyline. We have used the other verses apart from the chorus to show the main narrative storyline. The difference between the narrative storyline and performance is clear, as the narrative is shown in colour and the performance appears in black and white. The chorus is typically shown during the fast paced parts of the song, whereas the narrative is shown during the slower tempo parts. This is shown through longer frames, instead of quick cutting during the chorus and performance.

The storylines that we have created for the song are clear and appropriate as they link in with the lyrics of the song. 4.Do you have a variety of camera angles and editing techniques used for specific reasons? The camera angles throughout the drawn storyboard and the animatic storyboard are very varied. We have used close ups for part of the song to create a personal feel for the audience, for example when Amie sings the line "ignorance is your new best friend." The close ups also show emotions during the narrative part of the video. We have used long shots to establish both setting and that Vintage Rocks are a band. We need to establish they are a band as they are new so the audience need to see them as both a band and individuals. We have used low angle shots, for the performance part of the video, to imply that the audience is a member of the audience, when really there is nobody there. Thisis to help create the feel that the performance is personal to the viewer. We have repeated the camera angles within the chorus as this is typical of many pop-rock video. They tend to create what is shown during the chorus as the lyrics are being repeated. This is effective as it helps the audience to understand both the song and the video.

We have used quick cutting to show each of the different camera angles, to keep with the pace of the song. As the song is very fast paced, we needed to show this in the video. By using simple quick cuts, it creates a pace that fits perfectly. We have used a superimposition towards the end of the music video showing the change between Amie and her friendAdd Images and Amie and the band members. Changes needing to be made from animatic video to music video After creating the animatic, we asked other people to give us feedback on what worked well and what needed to be changed before making the actual music video. Below are the sheets showing the feedback:

The changes we need to make are as follows: - Make sure the camera is not stationary for too long, or to make sure there is movement within the frame - Make sure there are pans and zooms within the music video - Add a variety of editing techniques, such as the superimposition towards the end of the video - Possible split screen -Make sure it is clear what is the photograph and what is the actual storyline - either putting the photograph in a frame and include the frame when filming, or show somebody holding the photograph. Print screens of Live Type a - title making Below shows printscreens of the title making process. We used a programme called Live Type to create the titles we wanted. In Live Type, we decided which fonts best suited out genre and band. The print screens also show that we exported, then imported the titles in to Final Cut Express and added them to the beginning of our music video as this is where you will typically find titles on a music video.
